Statistics show that China's import and export totaled US$509.768 billion in January through December 2001, the export volume reached US$266.155 billion and the import was US$243.613 billion, up by 7.5%, 6.8% and 8.2% respectively over the same period in 2000. The import & export of FIEs totaled US$259.098 billion, up by 9.5%; the export volume of FIEs reached US$133.235 billion, up by 11.5%, while the import reached US$125.863 billion, up by 7.3%. Of the investment made by FIEs, US$14.515 billion went to the import of equipment for their own use, up by 10.9% and accounting for 11.5% of their total import volume.
