Statistics show that China's import and export totaled US$221.551 billion in January through May 2002, the export volume reached US$115.991 billion and the import was US$105.561 billion, up by 12.1%, 13.2% and 10.9% respectively over the same period in 2001. The import & export of FIEs totaled US$116.078 billion, up by 15.6%; the export volume of FIEs reached US$59.78 billion, up by 16.6%, while the import reached US$56.298 billion, up by 14.5%. Of the investment made by FIEs, US$6.133 billion went to the import of equipment for their own use, up by 4% and accounting for 10.9% of their total import volume.
