Statistics show that China's import & export totaled US$500.261 billion in January through October 2002, the export volume reached US$262.499 billion and the import was US$237.762 billion, up by 19.7%, 20.6% and 18.7% respectively over the same period in 2001. The import & export of FIEs totaled US$264.252 billion, up by 25%; the export volume of FIEs reached US$135.831 billion, up by 25.3%, while the import reached US$128.421 billion, up by 24.7%. Of the investment made by FIEs, US$13.753 billion went to the import of equipment for their own use, up by 14.2% and accounting for 10.7% of their total import volume.
