Kunshan ETDZ was listed as an experimental area of intellectual property protection  by the Intellectual Property Office of China, becoming the third experimental area approved by the state after Suzhou Industrial Park and Suzhou High and  New Technology Development Zone in Jiangsu Province . .

Patent applications in Kunshan has been on growth in recent years, the quality of which was also seen being on the rise . The past two years saw an annual  increase of over 200％ in the applications , applications for patent of invention accounting for half of the total cases of Suzhou  .  Meanwhile, pushed vigorously by the government, patents are being transformed into real productivity. Many enterprises had developed their own intellectual properties, which has greatly drived the industry upgrade in the area thus realizing the transformation from made in Kunshan to originated in Kunshan . 

In order to promote the independent innovation and brand building of the enterprises, it is of vital importance to set up and optimize the excitation mechanism for intellectual properties .  In order to implement the strategy of protecting intellectual properties , a series of measures were adopted in the ETDZ including  establishing dedicated department , issuing the Proposed Regulation on Strengthening Intellectual Property Protection in Kunshan ETDZ  ,  setting up the award for contribution in intellectual property protection , opening a service hotline , assisting enterprises in declaration of scientific and technological achievements and products validation , all these has effectively promoted the innovation , supervision , protection and implementation of intellectual properties . 

The sound environment of intellectual property protection has greatly motivated the innovative enthusiasm of enterprises . Many multinationals have set up transnational R&D institutions in the zone ,such as NSK China  Technological Center and Aili(China) Co. Ltd Asia Pacific R&D Center.  Up to now , there are 183 R&D and engineering centers  , 50 of which were newly established in 2007 . at the same time , enterprises in the zone made great effort to enhance cooperation with institutions of  higher education  and scientific research   both at home and abroad , jointly pushing for the localization of research and development .  More than 50 institutions has carried out cooperation with enterprises in the zone . 

He Yan, Chief of the Administration Committee of the ETDZ said that being listed as an experimental area , the ETDZ's environment would be further optimized and intellectual property would become the engine for the development of high-grade technology industry，promoting core competitiveness of the zone .  After being listed as an experimental area ,  the ETDZ has attached great importance  to  the protection of intellectual property ,highlighting its  vital function for the system and technological innovation , aiming at making new stride at a higher level .
