Shanghai Sets A Foreign Trade Goal of USD100 Billion

2003-01-31

¡¡¡¡ The yearly foreign trade import and export in Shanghai is expected to total USD100 billion in 2007, with the export to exceed USD45 billion, according to Jiang Yiren, Vice Mayor of the city at a foreign trade and economic meeting held on January 29. Statistics suggest that, in 2002, Shanghai witnessed a total foreign trade import and export of USD72.65 billion, a rise of 19.3% over 2001. The export reached USD32.05 billion, surpassing USD30 billion for the first time and increasing by 16% over the previous year. In the next two years, Shanghai may realize at least a growth by USD10 billion in its foreign trade export, said Zhu Xiaoming, Director of Shanghai Municipal Commission of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation. Zhu's analysis further indicates that the growth space principally comes from two aspects. First, foreign-invested enterprises (FIEs) have been taking more than half of the total export in Shanghai in the past five years. At present, Yangtze River Delta Region, with Shanghai included, has become popular for the new round of transfer tide in the world's manufacturing sector. For this reason, it is foreseeable that FIEs, as the main force of the foreign trade export in Shanghai, may realize a sustained rapid growth in their future export. In 2002, the No.1 exporter in Shanghai is Dafeng (Shanghai) Computer Co., Ltd., a FIE that started its production less than two years ago but had realized an export as high as USD0.883 billion. This is also the first time that a production-oriented enterprise stands on the top among the exporters in the city. It is learnt that Shanghai Municipal Commission of Foreign Trade and Economic Cooperation has decided to place emphasis on boosting the export of IT products and software in the future. According to Jiang, following the gradual exhibition of the effect that the foreign trade has been pushed by China's WTO entry and doubled with the fact that Shanghai has won the bid of hosting the World Expo in 2010, Shanghai has possessed the conditions for a sustained rapid growth. "In the coming five years, Shanghai will initially build itself into an international trade center."
