I. Harbor and dock berth
By the end of 2002 there were 33,600 dock berths for production use in China's harbors, increased by 159 than that of last year, of which 835 ones with 10,000 T/A, with the net increased of 25 than that in last year.
There were also 700 coastal harbor berths with 10000 T/A, 244 universal sundry goods berths, 105 universal bulk berths and 441 singular-user berths. In the view of the singular-user berths, there were 57 raw oil ones, 63 berths of petroleum products and liquid gas, 102 coal berths, 32-grain berths and 98 container berths.
II. Waterway transportation equipments
The payload of ocean transportation is 23,162 thousand tons with 695.5 thousand tons less than that of last year; 11 thousand passengers and 3.2 thousand less than those of last year.
Transportation ability of ocean ship containers undergoes an obvious increase. Coastal transportation ships consist of 24.9 thousand standard containers, 7100 more than those of last year. Ocean transportation ships consist of 450.9 thousand standard containers, 28.5 thousand less than those of last year.
III. Cargo transported by waterway
1. Waterway transportation
There were 190 million passengers transported by waterway, up 0.5% in comparison with those of last year; volume of passenger circular flow of 8.18 billion person per km, down 9%; cargo by waterway of 1.42 billion tons, up 6.8%; volume of cargo circular flow of 2751.06 billion ton per km, up 5.9%. The passengers transported by waterway as well as volume of passenger circular flow respectively accounted for 1.2% and 0.6% of the overall transportation system. The volume of cargo circular flow by waterway, respectively accounted for 9.6% and 54.5% in overall transportation system.
2. Container transportation
There are 12.317 million standard containers by waterway, with a weight of 123.855 million tons, respectively up 16.5% and 13.5% in comparison with that of last year. And there are 9.348 million standard containers for ocean transportation, with a weight of 91.291 million tons, respectively up 10.9% and 12.4% in comparison with that of last year.
IV. Cargo handling volume at ports
In 2002, cargo handled at ports in China is 2.8 billion tons, up 16.6% in comparison with that of last year, in which there are 1.72 billion tons at coastal ports, up 18.1%.

There is a large increase in cargo of foreign trade. All ports in China succeed in handling cargo of foreign trade of 780 million tons, up 18.4% in comparison with that of last year.
There were 37.21 million standard containers handled in all ports, up 35.4% in comparison with that of last year, among which there were 33.76 million standard containers for coastal ports and 3.45 million standard containers for inland waterway
ports, respectively up 36.7% and 24.1% in comparison with those of last year.
In 2002, the cargo handled at ports in China is as follows:
dry and bulk cargo of 1.53 billion tons, up 17.5% in comparison with that of last year; liquid bulk cargo of 385 million tons, up 10.2%; sundry goods of 416 million tons, up 6.1%; the cargo handled by container of 340 million tons, up 33.7%; the cargo handled by rolling ship of 128 million tons, up 24.3%, which respectively accounts for 54.6%, 13.8%, 14.9%, 12.1% and 4.6% of cargo handled at ports.
In 2002, the cargo handled at ports in China is as follows:
coal of 500 million tons, petroleum of 330 million tons, metal ores of 240 million tons, mine construction material of 240 million tons, and steel and iron of 100 million tons, which respectively accounts for 22.3%, 14.6%, 10.7%, 10.8% and 4.4% of the cargo handled at ports. There is a large increase in cement, mine construction material, non-ferrous metal, as well as metal ores handled at key ports.
V. Fixed assets investment in transportation
In 2002 the investment in construction of coastal ports added up to RMB12.99 billion yuan, increased by RMB0.606 billion, up 4.8% in comparison with that of last year.
There are 84 newly built dock berths at coastal ports, and additional cargo handling capacity of 46.3 million tons, of which there are 14 berths with 10,000 T/A and additional cargo handling capacity of 37.64 million tons. There are 44 newly built dock berths at inland river ports and additional cargo handling capacity of 3.29 million tons.
