1. Transportation Infrastructure
1) Inland water transportation
The total mileage of inland water channel is increased and the technology is improved. By the end of 2002, there is 122,022 km of inland water channel, up 22 km over last year, in which there is 63,600 km of grade channel, accounting for 52.3%; 8,000 km of grade 3 and above, accounting for 6.8%; 23,500 km of grade 5 and above, accounting for 19.3%. The mileage of each grade respectively are, 2, 946 km for the first grade; 1,917 km for the second grade; 3, 359 km for the third grade; 6,257 km for the fourth grade; 9, 031 km for the fifth grade; 21, 076 km for the sixth grade; and 19,011 km for the seventh grade. There is 9, 743 km channel in reservoir areas nationwide.

2)Port dock berth
There are 29, 778 berths for production in inland water ports, including 135 berths with ten thousands level. The berths with ten thousand tons level mainly locate in mainstream of Yangtze River and Zhujiang River system, in which there are 121 berths in Yangtze River and 3 in branch of Yangtze River and 11 in Zhujiang River system.
2. Waterage equipments
The net inland water carrying capacity reached 24.1149 million tonnage, increased by 2,657,700 tonnage, carried 835,800 passengers.
By the end of 2002 inland transportation had 10,001 standard container seats, with the increase of 1,300 ones, up 14.4%.
3. Waterage volume
In the inland water transportation, Yangtze River system undertook 300 million tons freight transportation, with freight volume of circular flow of 79.53 billion ton/km, respectively accounting for 39.9% of inland water freight and 52.7% freight volume of circular flow; Jinghang (Beijing-Hangzhou) Cannel undertook the freight volume of 150 million tons, with freight volume of circular flow of 27.97 billion ton/km, respectively accounting for 19.7% and 18.5%; Zhujiang River system carried freight volume 90 million tons, with freight volume of circular flow of 15.05 billion ton/km, respectively accounting for 12.1% and 10.0%; Heilongjiang River system carried thefreight volume of 7 million tons, with freight volume of circular flow of 860 million ton/km, respectively accounting for 0.9% and 0.6%.
The average water passenger transportation distance nationwide was 43.7 km in 2002, reduced by 4.5 km over last year; the average freight transportation distance was 1,937.4 km, increased by 21.4 km over last year.
4. Handling capacity of ports
The freight handling capacity of port is growing steadily. In 2002 the ports handled 2.8 billion tons of freight, increased by 16.6% over last year. The inland river ports handled 1,080 million tons, increased by 14.3%.
The ports handled foreign trade commodities of 780 million tons, increased by 18.4% over last year, in which the coastal port handled 710 million tons, increased by 18.5%, and inland river ports handled 70 million tons, increased by 16.9%.
The nationwide ports handled 37.21 million standard containers, increased by 35.4%, in which coastal ports handled 33.76 million standard containers, increased by 36.7%, inland water ports handled 3.45 standard containers, increased by 24.1% over last year.
5. Fixed assets investment in transportation
RMB16.98billion yuan of the investment contributed to the port and inland water channel construction, decreased by RMB0.45 billion yuan, down 2.3%. The investment in coastal port construction increased and in inland water ports and channels decreased. The whole year investment in coastal port construction was RMB12.4 billion yuan, increased by RMB4.3 billion yuan, up 54.2%; and the investment in the inland water
port and channel construction reached RMB5 billion yuan, decreased by 400 million yuan, down 7.5%.
145 km inland water channel mileage was increased and improved in the whole year.
