The Quantity and Strength of China’s Individual and Private Enterprises Increase Substantially

According to the result of the second national economic census, by the end of 2008, the number of China’s private enterprises had reached 3.596m, up 81.4%, with an increase of 1.614m compared with that in the first national economic census in 2004.
Ma Jiantang, deputy head of leader group of the second national economic census of the State Council and director of the National Bureau of Statistics, said in the press conference held by the Information Office of the State Council on December 25 that by the end of 2008 the number of China’s business entities had totaled in 4.959m, up 52.6%, with an increase of 1.709m compared with that in 2004.
Among the assets of enterprises, state-owned enterprises accounted for 23%, dropping by 8.1 percentage points compared with that in 2004; limited companies accounted for 28.7%, with an increase of 7.7 percentage points compared with that in 2004; private enterprises accounted for 12.3%, increasing by 3.3 percentage points compared with that in 2004.
